Job description

On behalf of the Director General of the National Institute for Medical Research, the Centre manager for NIMR Muhimbili wishes to advertise the post of Assistant Project Coordinators, which requires highly motivated and competent Tanzanians to fill the posts on annual contract basis with the possibility of renewal

1. CHANJO KWA WAKATI PROJECT

The National Institute for Medical Research, Muhimbili Research Centre in collaboration with University of South Carolina, Emory University, Duke University, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have been funded by National Institute of Health (NIH) to conduct a study titled “Chanjo Kwa Wakati” – Leveraging community health workers and a responsive digital health system to improve vaccination coverage and timeliness in resource-limited settings. Chanjo Kwa Wakati (“Timely Vaccination” in Kiswahili, the most commonly spoken language in Tanzania) is a community-based, integrated digital health intervention to improve vaccination timeliness. The intervention combines human resources (CHWs), lowcost digital strategies (electronic communication, process automation), a vaccination knowledge intervention, and insights from behavioral economics (reminders, incentives). The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of Chanjo Kwa Wakati for improving rates and timeliness of childhood vaccinations and the potential role of machine learning approaches for identifying children at risk of non- or delayed vaccinations.

2. NANOPORE SEQUENCING PROJECT

NIMR – Muhimbili Research Center in collaboration with KNCV Tuberculosis foundation are implementing a study to investigate the utility of nanopore sequencing with MinION devices for the diagnosis and surveillance of infectious diseases, including at least tuberculosis (TB), COVID-19, and WHO antimicrobial Resistant Priority Pathogens. The project intends to strengthen capacity for molecular diagnostics at national and subnational laboratories and generate evidence on the utility of nanopore sequencing for routine diagnostics in clinical settings in MLIC.
